London selector, collector, and diverse DJ Mr Shiver will be playing at the Campo Sancho Festival in July this year. It’s the small festival with a big attitude which returns for its seventh edition in July. Headliners include Laurent Garnier, Norman Jay, Crazy P’s Danielle Moore, and a host of great talent.Ahead of his set at Campo Sancho we thought it would be fun to invite Mr Shiver to talk us through his top 10 Balearic Masterpieces. From Art of Noise to Nu Genea, to The Cure. It’s a cracking playlist.
1. ART OF NOISE, MOMENTS IN LOVE (BEATEN)
Gotta kick off proceedings with this one. It's the one I've known the longest. Bryl Cream anyone? (It wasn't this mix in the advert ) - Trevor Horn, what a genius!!!
2. MANUEL GÖTTSCHING, E2-E4
An hour long and the LP cover is a chess board. Perfect for starting an 8 hour DJ set with. Also, the basis for another Balearic classic, Sueño Latino.
3. THE GRID, FLOATATION (SUBSONIC GRID MIX)
Quite simply, a Balearic masterpiece. Mixed by the late and very very great Mr Andrew Weatherall
4. ADRIAN GURVITZ , NEW WORLD
An infectious groove, with Adrian's sweet falsetto. Add some steel pan, and simmer!
5. NU GENEA, PRAJA MAGIA
This band can do no wrong. It took me ages to decide which track of theirs to choose. The sound of Napoli but totally Balearic at the same time.
6. THE CURE, LULLABY (EXTENDED REMIX)
What to say about this one? The LP version is superb to start with but this remix somehow manages to elevate it even further.
The most Balearic record ever made by a Goth band? I think so!!!
7. DOCTOR ROCKIT, CAFÉ DE FLORE (CHARLES WEBSTER'S LATIN LOVERS REMIX)
A beautiful acoustic guitar riff, some accordion, and a trumpet solo.
Two legendary house producers (Doctor Rockit is, of course, Matthew Herbert) and the equally talented Charles Webster. BLISS!!!
8. GILBERTO GIL, TODA MENINA BAHIANA
The sound of sunshine and one of the catchiest chorus hooks of all time. Beautiful simplicity.
9. RONDO VENEZIANO , LA SERENISSIMA
This one never fails to give me goosebumps and I have heard it A LOT.
Baroque Balearic at its finest!
10. BUGGLES, ISLAND
A fairly recent discovery for me. I couldn't believe it was by the same group that had the 'Video killed the Radio Star' hit. Then I remembered. It's produced by that man Trevor Horn. Entitled ' Island' and ending with the sound of waves, so undoubtedly Balearic
