Most Recent Track Tuesday March 16, 2010 "down town" by sugar babe from songs
came across this surfing on amazon.co.jp delving deep into the city pop archives. this is a niagara production featuring a young tatsuro yamashita on vocals. pretty hard to resist the vibe on this. care free good times pop. I like the bit that goes "hooky wookie" ... down town
Monday March 15, 2010 "coastlines" by windsurf from weak ends
this popped up on the shuffle and it sounded kind of fresh to these weary ears. we left this off the album because we couldn't quite get the mix to sound good, which is a shame considering how much we worked on this track (i think it nearly totaled sorcerer's macbook once or twice), but its better to have some dustygrooves lurking in our closets for future airing. so here goes. once, twice, three times a TOTD.
Saturday January 23, 2010 "delphi" by zeus & apollo from colossus of rhodes
I'm getting hitched in about a month so I made this little experimental piece of music to play while guests arrive before the ceremony. well, I may redo it, but the idea was just to create some true background ambiance. i found a rhodes recording that I tracked a while back and set about throwing it the chipper. sounds good in all this rain we've been having. fancy free download over here:
Thursday January 21, 2010 "circling" by four tet from there is love in you
getting a listen to the new four tet album which is better to these ears than anything i've heard from mr. hebden since at least 2005. seems like he decided to give the "I'm an important 20th/21st century conceptual artist with jazz leanings" thing a rest and make a solid record of tunes the rest of us could enjoy. thanks. here's a preview on soundcloud.
Tuesday January 12, 2010 "Franny" by Marc Benno from Minnows
My eternal search for the Batteaux record has turned up a fair share of gems that would have otherwise gone ignored in the miscellaneous B section of many a record emporium. I first came across this Marc Benno album in Boston about a year ago, attracted by the foggy day photo on the cover, the 1972 recording date, the tastefully rad gatefold image of a fish printed in monotone on uncoated stock, and the appearance of both Clarence White and Bobby Womack as sidemen. It took a few plays before I got hooked, but eventually I think this unlikely blues-based slice of A&M gold was easily my album of 2009. This is the jam that opens the album, and lies a tad more on the folk funk side of the road. Franny
Monday January 11, 2010 "o caroline" by matching mole from matching mole
during the chimney shutdown i dug out a tape of robert wyatt related material I made from a friend's collection back when I still made tapes. for obvious reasons, this was one of the stand outs. wyatt at his poppy best. love everything about this tune. o caroline
