"1952 Vincent Black Lightning" by Richard Thompson from Rumour And Sigh

I have discussions once in a while with my roommate about what we call "Celtic flair", that is to say over-use of flutes and lutes and...gnomes, I guess. I defend it more than him but when we watch those chicks with the violins on PBS or those pud-dudes with the headsets it's hard to argue. Unless you're this guy.

"When Somebody Loves You Back" by Teddy Pendergrass from

Last night I watched, one after another on PBS, a Sam Cooke doc., then a Marvin Gaye one. Tragic ends to lives that raged. Now Teddy, today. Crazzy...

"How Will You?" by Azita from How Will You?

This was a sure contender for my never-made best of 2009 mix. More to maybe not come. AZ - How Will You?

"Wrong About You" by Das Boton from Miniature Portraits

This is from last week actually but tonight was sooo burning I had to share something. I got to sing with them too and so many people there were folk I've known for like a bazillion years. And the night before I saw Johnny in Bobby Masurek's 'Sploding Star Orch. at the Green Mill and they slayed. I really need to detox now.

"Put Your Back To It" by November Group from Work That Dream 12"

Unafraid to cop some Moroder and even more so to add both bass AND synth slapping. Wonder what they were all like in the van...

"Female Murderer" by Connie Chan Po-chu from ??

Remember Audiogalaxy? Man, that ruled. I typed in "chinese oldies" and was richly rewarded nightly (um, I had dial-up that needed to use the only phone-line. I think it was Earthlink?). Don't think I got this one from there though. Someone needs to do a good treatment on this genre, like Ethiopiques-style. There was a decent comp. a while back but they insisted on adding a bonus remix disc that blew hard. The only other sets I've seen/have are all in Chinese packaging and I can't read Chinese. Kinda fuels the mystery but I would like to know more. Oh, that one Gary Lucas record isn't too shabby neither..
