"Sourgou" by Kaira Arby from Ya Rassoul

Another gem from the Awesome Tapes from Africa blog. Can't remember what the story is on Kaira Arby, but this is a serious groove: beautifully urgent call and response singing and the bass in effect. Sourgou

"Highland Tune" by Huun-Huur-Tu from Where Young Grass Grows

Another surprise from the shuffle. Love the style of this one: jamming out for a bit and then strolling into ambient fields for a while. Somehow almost sounds electronic at times, even though I'm pretty sure it's throat singing and nose harps or something. Highland Tune

"Inkulu Into Ezakwenzeka" by Xhosa - Ngqika from The Nguni Sound: South Africa & Swaziland

Hugh Tracey's recordings of African music are truly an endless treasure trove. This one popped up on the shuffle the other day and blew my mind. A sweet but serious voice sings over a steady heavy string riff. It made me think of Mia Doi Todd for some reason.

"Straighten Out Your Life" by Al Green from Greatest Gospel Hits

Another Al Green classic has me all fired up. The squishiest of synths on this jam .

"Melody Make Me Dance" by Rick James from Glow

Rick James here working a kind of 80s synth-funk world music vibe and totally pulling it off. Qualms were never a part of the Rick James repertoire.

"Oualahila Ar Tesninam" by Tinariwen from Amassakoul

These guys jam hard. True riff merchants: Pretty sure they have a new album out that I need to hear badly.
