"Kate (Variations on a Theme by Kate Bush)" by Sonny Sharrock from Highlife

Slow burner ballad that sets a mood I can get behind. I love all Sonny, including this cross-over record. Every track has great melodies and nice touches. Like this bass and synth intro to Kate. I remember when I was a kid seeing a great (public?) TV special with Bill Cosby 'sitting in' with Sharrock & Band. Anyone else ever see this? Did I dream it?

"Small Thief" by RTX from Pound for Pound

"Rhythm of the Night" by Corona from Beau Travail Soundtrack

I love dance scenes in movies. This is my favorite one, from the end of Claire Denis' 'Beau Travail'. I've always sort of liked this song, but it's perfect in this scene. Something super-depressing and lonely in a lot of euro-pop club music, beneath the celebration. Keep watching this to the end, though It's really life affirming when he starts spazzing.

"On the Road Again" by Canned Heat from Live

Going Up The Country On Bumrocks today reminded that it's that time of the summer to get out the Canned Heat records, specifically Alan Wilson's tracks (the blind owl). The husky bearded dude I could take or leave. Watching this, I have to remind myself these guys are like 25 at most. Canned Heat is like the oldest-seeming band. Maybe that biker blues vibe.

"Bandit" by Neil Young & Crazy Horse from Greendale

Getting back into this record for some reason. Haven't seen the film.I like this monologue sung by a paranoid dealer, I guess, who is half reminiscing half losing it. 'Half the money's gone'-- what a sad line. NY does regret really well. BANDIT

"Radar/space control" by Stephan Oliva/Bernard Hermann from Ghosts of Bernard Hermann

Eerie piano transcriptions of Bernard H's film scores. This is a cool record.

"Ferris Wheel" by Donovan from Sunshine Superman

My favorite song from SS, maybe from the whole corpus. Watch the Seagull fly

"Nobody Wins" by Kris Kristofferson from Jesus Was a Capricorn

Got this record at a library sale years ago, lost it. Felt like listening again yesterday, so, thanks, internet. This track's a gorgeous downer 70s style, a divorce ballad such as are not made anymore. Vocals are beautifully recorded. Classic country-glam cover too, complete with shirtless dude holding what's gotta be a coors can.

"Grand Larceny" by Sea Level from Sea Level

Obvious choice off this one for DC ethos would be 'Just a Good Feeling', but Grand Larceny is so undeniably great. Cool layers and changes and rhythms on this track.

"Humanity Part II" by Ennio Morricone from The Thing OST

My fiancee says listening to this on the downtown bus enhances the experience. Oh, the HUMANITY Great bass ostinato in first part.
