"Cry Tough (Extended Version)" by Alton Ellis & the Flames from Some Treasure Isle comp

This record is likely from 1967 or 1968, when the earliest experiments in dub happened at Duke Reid's Treasure Isle label. Though it may at first sound like standard fare late-'60s rocksteady, once you get past the 2:00 mark they're clearly dubbing it up with the space echo (King Tubby maybe?). I'd be interested to know if there are any dub tracks that pre-date this. Hear it at last.fm or lala.

"Angie La La" by Nora Dean from ?

An old friend posted this up on Facebook. I'm a fan of Duke Reid and the Treasure Isle label, but I've never heard anything like this. So baked.

"Do You Remember Yesterday?" by Ace Spectrum from Low Rent Rendezvous (1975)

I can't get enough of these huge, uptempo string-laden soul tracks that walk the line between northern soul and early disco. This album has quite a few to choose from. Interesting side note that another track on this album ("Keep Holding On") was the 5th song ever to be released as a 12" single.

"A Tattoo" by Smokey Robinson from Pure Smokey (1974)

Came up with this in the old stacks of thrift store finds for a re-rule. Love his voice, the horns, the guitars. The rhythm is so hard and solid - so many toms and congas and not a hi-hat or cymbal in sight. And the lyrics - Smokey getting so stoked on his tattoo! Stream it on lala or last.fm.

"What is my Woman For?" by Curtis Mayfield from Heartbeat (1979)

I love that this track could have easily been on any of his early solo albums but has crazy synth toms all over it. To hear this LOUD in a sweaty little club late at night is heaven. Check it on lala.

"I Can Understand" by The New Birth from Birth Day

I did a little Friday after work jaunt to the local record store and am so hyped that I found this. Nice way to end the work week!

"Deep South" by Layo and Bushwacka from Low Life

Re-ruling this one. Late '90s sampladelia usually filed under breaks, but a house track at heart. Amen.

"Solar Wind" by Ramsey Lewis from Solar Wind

This is an old favorite. A nice funky jam. Listen here.

"Get the Cream Off the Top" by Eddie Kendricks from The Hit Man

Nice jam by Eddie, but I can hardly believe the lyrics on this. In a dollar bin near you.

"Sao Paulo" by Chic from Chic

Gotta re-rule this one posted by Ryan Chimney years back. This may be Chic's greatest song that doesn't sound like Chic. Nice loungey tropical jam.
