So, maybe I'm the lurker or semi-lurker some are referring to here, but I feel invested enough to chime in (at least 30% because my post a few days ago seems to have set some stuff off and I feel compelled to explain myself). I agree streaming is great. I happen to think Soundcloud is superior to YouTube, but I doubt it matters much for this conversation. So streaming has its place, but when I look at my digital music collection, there is this pile of outlier stuff that came from DC that I absolutely love. Stuff I never would have heard otherwise, and which is pretty permanently embedded in my life because someone ripped and shared it and it cycles through my devices/computers/playlists/etc., and which I probably won't ever see in hard copy because as much as I dig music and my library I'm not out there scooping up the really rare / hard to find stuff (that admission may not be a popular one here, but some transparency is good). DC has, over a few years, expanded my palette and knowledge-base. I have loved /do love it because of that. I'm far more equipped to track down some rare or just super-niche stuff based on some thread I pick up somewhere after hanging out here for a while. I attribute most of my DC-relationship and resulting education to stuff Chims have shared in a way where I could live with it, listen to it repeatedly, carry it with me to the grocery store, etc.
