Klaus Schulze "Velvet Voyage/Crystal Lake" from Mirage
File Under: space

The other day I walked up to MC in Amoeba and asked "What do you know about Schulze?", this cd in hand. The innocence of that question and the journey that it inspired will no doubt turn out to be transformational in my appreciation of music. I've been digging recently through the early catalog of Jean-Michel Jarre, having resurrected his work from the distant haze of my childhood, and while much of it is exceptional, there's always the bits that stray into mainstream crossover space cheese - but of course, the French love cheese. What I've since discovered is Klaus Schulze's decidedly more serious and minimal German take on the synth soundscape, fulfilling all hope for what could be - mysterious, meditative, celestial, experimental. I know some of you knew this, but Schulze is the master of space. There's not a moment I can fault in this work. I go inside and I never, never want to leave. With two tracks at 30 minutes each I can't possibly post one, and the experience is far too immersive to edit. 'Mirage' is so archetypal, it's one of the few records I'd recommend to anyone, simply to experience one pinnacle of the human imagination. Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust...

Schulze is tight. This album is one of his more minimal affairs, but the following year's X is all over the map with live drums and cello.
