Don Cherry "Degi Degi" from Brown Rice
File Under: playground remedy

Beatiful weather up here, been to a playground all day with my kid... very nice, but right now I'm in real need of some inspirating music... today and yesterday brought some excellent tracks, thanks chimneys! Came to this Don Cherry track cause another track from this Brown Rice LP was 'reissued' (ahem) on a 12 recently with three other great tracks (including a song from Jodorowsky's Holy Mountain, which as far as I can find out never got an LP release, correct me if I'm wrong... please....)

The only copies I've seen of BR were Italian, I had thought maybe EMI released it in other parts of Europe, as well. Maybe not. People, especially in the US will more than likely have an easier time locating a copy of 'Don Cherry' lp on Horizon, same recording, same tracks and I have to say I'm quite fond of the photo of Mr Cherry on the sleeve . . . |

To my knowledge the Brown Rice LP was originally released in Italy only, recorded in NYC though.... cover artwork done by Moki Cherry. |

This recording gets a bit confusing as there are so many issues. The copy I have is on Horizon (SP 717) released in '76. Discogs says '75 but the only date printed is the notes by Stanley Crouch which were dated September 1976. The lp was just titled 'Don Cherry'. The same songs were released by emi the same year and the lp was titled 'Brown Rice'. The Horizon issue had this cover The record was issued on cd in 1989 by A&M and was called Brown Rice. The cd sleeve had the Watts Towers edited out of the picture. To my knowledge, all issues have the same 4 tracks. |

This lp is great thru and thru. I'm very happy to report I met Mr Cherry at a Terry Riley concert in a small club in Oakland in 1990. Sweetest dude you'd ever hope to hang with. |
