I usually approach "lost classics" with trepidation-- rarely do the whole albums end up being classics. However, in the case of this Steve Ashley record...how did I never hear this before last week? Ashley was kind of a peripheral British folkie. He seems to always have had some kind of iron in the fire- Anne Briggs covered a song of his on one of her records, he was in the first incarnation of The Albion Band, etc- but he was kind of a mystery dude. This record features Dave Mattacks on drums, Barry Dransfield on guitar/violin, Robert Kirby (who arranged the strings on Nick Drake's records) on arrangements. It's not overdone or heavyhanded at all, just totally rad. Totally worth seeking out if you like the jamming shepherd.
