Ashley Brothers "Open My Eyes"

from 45 RPM single Track posted by Sooty Chimney [94] File Under: fuzz anthems
The Nazz enthusiasts among you will appreciate this. I found an mp3 online for this cooked version of "Open My Eyes" by an obscure band from upstate New York called the Ashley Brothers. This is from a 1969 '45, apparently. I'll tell you straight up that the original version of this is my favorite song of all time. It's got a killer riff, great harmonies and it just sizzles from start to finish. This version nearly manages to rock HARDER, in spite of some nice candy-ass touches (see: the "Yeah!" background vox). A wild curiosity.

This is a band my father was in (drummer, Kent Brown)- originally known as "The Originals" back in the 60's. They transitioned through a few different names and members. I can easily get more info from my father if needed... :-)

I listened to these guys ALL the time in the 60's. They were the Ex-cels back then (I think). At one time they worked as "The Originals featuring The Ex-cels" and that band was unbelievable in the early '70's at Sarris' Restaurant and Bar in Gloversville or Johnstown NY (can't remember which city cuz they're right on top of each other). The Leo brothers always had time for this young kid (back then) at Hi School dances in St Johnsville NY. I'd hunt them down on break and they'd shoot the breeze with me about playing, etc. That kid (me) went on to music school and taught 33 years and played every wknd for 10 yrs straight. I'm also a jingle singer on radio and tv here in WNY. I passed on the Leo's goodvibes to my students as much as I could. Super musicians - I'll never forget them doing a tremendous version of "Girl Come Running". What band would attempt that! What great voices. One of the best memories of my youth. My senior year I hired them for our after-prom party (which put the class in debt!) and they played from midnight - 4am as I recall. Just the greatest guys and musicians. They also had a tune out called "Like A Dream".

This is my uncles band Sal Leo...His son, now living in NYC Skip Leo and daughter Sarah Orloff have a sick band with Rick Little and Dain music style is Girl fronted bratty, catchy punk rock!! Old School and new combine to confess confusion and rebellion against society's ailments in a post-adolescent world. check them out on www.myspace.com/dieprettynyc
if you are not into hard punk check out their old band the flying bobbz... there is real talent here and huge personality in these hometown heros

Van Duren - Are You Serious?
iconI agree. Just relistened to the Nazz original and, you're right, nothing rocks harder than that. This version is almost L.A. studio pop-style. Still, I diggit!
