Robbie Dupree "Steal Away" from Robbie Dupree
File Under: A Stroll Around the Yacht, While Moored in the Bahamas
This is the ultimate forgotten one-hit-wonder of the days of late-70s/early 80s California soft rock. It takes me back to hearing music in my mom's car on Magic 106, before discovering the Mighty 690 and music that I could claim as my own. The Allmusic description of this album pretty much sums it up. It's rare to hear such a blatant ripoff of an artist or a particular song - in this case the Doobie Brothers' "What a Fool Believes." And no, that's not the funky blue-eyed M&M on the backups. In fact, Michael McDonald had nothing to do with this track from what I gather. Looks like Robbie also ripped Michael McDonald's whole steez too with this album cover: 
Robbie, did you really think by adding a sitar to the song that no one would notice? Maybe I've watched too many episodes of Yacht Rock, but it almost seems like a conspiracy. You can almost hear the conversation between him and his manager. Robbie:"Hey, I wrote this song. I think it's a hit but most of it sounds stolen from the Doobie Brothers." Manager: "Hey, if it's a hit, then steal away Robbie."

Or while moored off Catalina Island would be more appropriate. Robbie Dupree even moved to California from Woodstock, NY, I guess to be more authentically light rock.
I've g-mailed "What a Fool Believes" by the Doobie Brothers. Check it.
I'll try to rip this other Doobies' song that he ripped the bridge from later. |
