File Under: Coke on the Console

trying to throw together a C.O.T.C. megamix over here for a friend that has taken a healthy interest in the subject (both the music and the ingredients). pretty much inspired by Gaucho, which according to clunk's estimation (and later my own) is the C.O.T.C.'s #1 chart topper. so far here's what we're looking at (in no particular order, except maybe alphabetical)... plenty of totds in the there...

well put... now I'm going to rat you out...
ahhhhhhh yes...one of my favorite genres, and one that i have dubbed "coke on the console." my friends and i have built a whole mythology around this genre. in our world, it calls to mind a sleazy sort of 70s vibe characterized by long smokey nights over huge consoles, packs upon packs of cigarettes, fiddling with brand new synthesizers, musical and technical perfection, dimly lit control rooms, sunglasses in said dimly lit control rooms, high end tube gear, wood panelling, chest hair peaking through open shirts, beards, long hair, mustaches, white blazers, and of course, coke on the console. you know, that unmistakable 70s studio sound...
some noteworthy all-stars of the coke on the console genre include: Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan (quite possibly the kings of this genre), the Alan Parsons Project, Bob Welch, early 70s Mccartney, Pink Floyd, Bee Gees, Herb Alpert, Hall & Oates, Giorgio Moroder, most disco, and pretty much any band that had at least one dude (naturally, wearing a white blazer) behind stacks of synthesizers.
i mean, how could there have not been coke all over the console to have made a lot of those records? those records are insane. plus, it was the 70s... |

a dude like Herb Alpert is neck deep in/living the genre and thus most of his output in the prime COTC years (i'm venturing to guess the prime years of COTC would be between '72 and '82) would most likely qualify. whereas a band like Abba, who, with the jam Mother posted, are trying to branch INTO the style would have to be evaluated on a jam by jam basis.
the rules are loose, but you know it when you hear it.
all this wants to be written down in the funniest way possible to eventually be showcased on cokeontheconsole.com |

A fine idea. But doesn't any COTC mix need at least one Buckingham-era Fleetwood Mac tune?

Yeah Beyond is that one. Quick re-listen i think your right Rise is more fitting for sure. Clunk will know the best Welch jam if one fits. |

Heard rumors of this comp. Was thinking a Bob Welch track would be on there? Also id vote "Beyond" over "Rise" from Herb Alpert. Pretty curious if one is more CotC over the other, would kind of clear up the genre for me. |

by the way, gotta check a couple of songs on paul simon's "hearts and bones" album for their cotc potential. seems like every sixties dude that was still in the biz by 1981-82 had to submit to the style...
check "allergies" and "think too much (a)" pretty amazing actually, if for nothing else than their oddity in the paul simon catalog. |
